Market for refugees camp – Kenya

Market for refugees camp

Kakuma, Kenya

The project for a new market for the Kakuma refugee camp was developed for the 2017 IDevelopment international competition.

Around a large square with an elliptical shape shaded by an innovative bamboo structure, there are spaces for market stands and environments that can be used as classrooms for professional training or as shared laboratories for processing products to sell.

The market spaces are based on simple semi-elliptical modules, which can be tracked with great ease and can be freely implemented by the recipients of the individual stands.

The curved shapes recreate an enveloping and dynamic environment completely absent in the repetitive geometries of the refugee camp.

The organization of the market is based on the implementation of a cooperative between refugees of different origins and on the use of already widespread technologies such as vouchers on SIM for payments.
